How to define, create or assign a variable?

I am a Zipabox newbee and am trying to figure out how to define, create or assign variables in rules.
In the puzzle, in the variable group, I have tried the building block "Set Variable Select to", but I am not able to select a variable. Do I need to create or define the variable somewhere else?
