Backup Module + 3G - with Ethernet Cabel Connected

Michael Roettgen shared this idea 8 years ago
Under Consideration

Hello together,

i use the Zipabox with a 433 Module and the Backup-Module with the 3G Stick and 35 Z-Wave Actors (mainly fibaro).

The 433, the battery and the 3G Connection works well.

But today i had the following situation and i need some help/advice. Maybe Zipato has to change the Software of the Zipabox a little bit ?

My Zipabox is connected via Lan Cabel to my router. But the router had no more DSL or Internet-Connection. In this case the router still delivers an IP Adress to the Zipabox (Local IP Adress).

I thought the zipabox would recognize the loss of the internet-connection and go online via the 3G stick. But? The zipabox didn't do that... it stayed connected to the router - without using the 3G stick. So my zipabox was offline. If i plug the lan cable out it goes online via 3G !!

What do i have to change? or can zipato program an internet-Connection Check, so if there is no internet-Connection thru the LAN-Cabel, that it will go online via 3G - i think, that this would be a great and security thing?

Would do the others think?

Regards

Michael

No ideas / help from The zipato Team?

I am about to get the Backup module - but it does not make any sense if it cannot detect a loss of internet connection.

Any input form the Zipato team?

Did you fill the 3g setting in the controller settings in the Web center? I'm not sure if it helps.

Yes i did this, and this is why my zipabox is only via 3G if the power is disconnected!

What are the criteria that makes the Zipabox go to 3G except for cable disconnect?

(Just bought the backup modul and 3Gstick , and to hear that it will only be useful during a poweroutage and not during internet outage is disturbing and makes me angry quite frankly......)

Erik,

I can confirm that internet outage does NOT cause Zipabox to activate the 3G stick. As long as there is a working ethernet connection to a router, the Zipabox is quite happy, even if there is no internet access at all.

I'm glad I never got the 3g stick... Zipato needs to address this.

Right now i just disconnected the LAN Cabel permanently so the BOX is only online via 3G - this i ok because it only uses a very minimum of Data so my Prepaid 10 Euro Card will hold a year or so...

But Zipato should reprogram the Software so that the Zipabox will use 3G in Case of loss of the internet connection - and not only if the Power is disconnected.

Hope Zipato will read and reply this here?!?

Please make a comment Zipato! :)

IMHO, most of the decent routers on the market have this ability built in. This means, instead of attaching your 3G Stick to the Zipabox, you should do it on your router USB port. In this case, the router will detect internet loss and switch to 3G automatically.

I use the same solution with AVM fritzbox and it works perfectly.

And instead of buying a backup module for the zipabox you would by an ups so the router and the zipabox would keep alive. This would also be a working solution for zipatile.

Alexus and Attila,

I beg to differ:

Your workarounds will work in many scenarios, but unfortunately not in all. If, for instance, there is constant data traffic over the DSL due to remote backup, remote sync or whatever, and the DSL line is down, you wouldn't need that run temporarily over the mobile network. You would, however, want your security system to keep on working.

That said, for someone who wants extra security to have to resort to upgrading a DSL router to one with 4G/LTE fallback, and adding an UPS, just because Zipabox 3G backup mechanism isn't working properly, is bad medicine. The right medicine is for Zipato to fix the issue.

Brgds

Robert

Well, obviously I agree with you. Noone however knows if this will be addressed or not.
