Brand limit without pro-licence
Under Consideration
I´ve got a suggestion for the brand limit:
Right now I use virtual Switches, Z-Wave and 433Mhz. If I now decide to use
e.g. enocean, I will have to buy a pro licence as well.
That adds up to about 200 Euros for the next protokoll (plus sensors/actors).
Thats quite a lot of money for the next protokoll.
So I would like to suggest that you increase the max. nr. of brands for
every Zipato extension module by one. Wouldn´t that be a fair deal?
Furthermore in my case I went for a 433 MHz module to save some money with cheap remotes. If I had known, that there is a limit to come for existing users, I´d have been better of by paying a bit more for a Z-Wave remote and spare the brand slot for another protocol.
No connection
Real-time notifications may not work
I think it´s not that expensive. As far as I understand the pro licence I will keep all advantages (e.g. all protokolls beeing availabe at the time of purchase pro licence and those beeing developed during the next year) forever apart from further updates and the server space, but nevertheless I have to buy the licence to use the expansion module.
But if I buy an expension module, I would expect to get the protokoll for that module without an extra fee. And if I get access to knx, enocean, 433 MHz and Zigbee only by buying an zipato module, I would expect those protocols beeing excluded from the brand limit. (I have to admit that I still feel a bit cheated because there was no brand limit when I bought the box (beta status) and now I´m restricted like a new user....)

If you buy these addons after, you get access to the per expansion module

But then I should have a brand limit of four. I´ve got one 433 MHz module attached to the box and have a brand limit of three. So with z-wave, 433 MHz and a virtual sensor I´ve used up my brand limit.
I really like the idea of zipato and the (scratch based) rule creator but right now I´m not willing to invest more in it because I doubt that it will stand the test of time with that licence model.
With basic features the box doesn´t do enough to be a game changer (for example the missing chance of looking at variables makes troubleshooting to difficult to recommend the system to average users (they might go for eg. homee) and the restrictions are so severe that I, if I hadn´t started with beta, I would have send the box back to amazon on the spot because if I can´t test it decently, I wouldn´t think of investing more money.
And for a pro system zipato lacks the backup feature. For me, the box now does everything I need in my mothers flat (and it does the job better than I expected it!) but if it breaks down and I´m forced to start from scratch, I think I´m going to try another system. Sorry to say that ;-(( If you look at the german rezension at amazon there is only one left with five stars and the main reason is the licence policy. And I already thought about changing that one as well to four stars for the same reason.
