Does backup module enable 3G when internet is off but power still on?

Hi,

I am about to invest in the 3G backup module for my Zipabox.

Unfortunately I cannot get anybody to confirm that it also steps in when the internet connection breaks down without a power failure.

In Scandinavia we almost never experience power failures – but now and then issues with the cable connection. So internet backup is actually more needed than power backup.

Thanks,

Thomas

I think it would be best if you open a ticket on zipato support.

Thomas,

Unfortunately, Zipabox does *not* activate the 3G backup route whenever there is no internet connectivity through the main ethernet port. As long as the Zipabox has a connection to a working router, it is quite happy:

I have tried and tested this several times, both during unfortunate situations where the ISP has had problems, and when the DSL modem has had problems, but the router to which the Zipabox is connected has had power. The Zipabox has remained offline, and the backup 3G route has not been activated.

I guess we'll just have to be paitent and wait for Zipato to add a "heartbeat" check to the internet and switch ports on absence of that, rather than absence of working ethernet.

I have a situation right now in one of the Zipabox installatons, where we're in the process of changing router: We've installed a router, but have not yet finished flashing OpenWRT firmware and setting up firewall rules etc., alas, the Zipabox is connected, but without internet access. Given the way the failover is constructed, the Zipabox is NOT utilizing its 3G backup, and the site is thus currently 100% offline.
