Magnetic contact on the mailbox ???? Problem

Martin H shared this question 8 years ago
Need Answer

Have mounted a magnetic contact on the mailbox to get the info when the mail comes. But think that it does not have time to react when the mailbox is opened and closed. It is within distance to Zipabox. Need another solution or suggestions on magnetic switch that reacts faster.

Thanks / M

No real tips for any solution. Ideally you should you a door contact sensor and ensure to stick it to the post box so when the flap is open, the distance of the magnetic contact from the base is af far as possible. How about the sensative stips. that is flat and small product, perhaps it may be the best solution.

Have you looked into Sensative strips ? http://www.sensative.com/

Is it a metal mail box? Remember that radio signals will not pass through metal. So of you place the transmitter inside a metal casing, you will probably get range issues.

Very good idea. In this case you will probably need a cable magnetic sensor that will be attached to a zwave module outside of this mailbox. But you can always try it first. Signal will be weaker, but perhaps it will still reach.

I have placed a battery driven Vision_Security Repeater Slave in a box beside my mailbox, a TSM02 inside the mailbox, with the "eye" looking in, and the magnet on the side (inside mailbox). Configure highest pir sensetivity. Also a powerdriven device as repeater inside the house as close as possible to the mailbox.

Using a 20000 mA powerbank for the repeater outside, witch i recharge now and then.

I receive 4 signals:

-Pir is activated by mail passing by it, this is mail arrive.

-Pir is resting, this is mail arrived.

-A rule disable pir when lid is open, magnetic contact enter open state, this is mail collecting.

-Magnetick contact closed when lid is closed, this is mail collected.

-Lux when lid is opened.

-Temperature

-Batterystatus

-A log of all happenings with your mailbox.

-I get a mail when mail arrive and are collected.

It show up as offline status many times, but still works remarkebly well, it goes online as an event happen.

Most tricky bit is if mail arrives several times a day, the first mail may cover the eye.

Goal is a sensor with 6 signals, witch also includes vibration, to detect tampering and vandalism of the

mailbox, and work as an alarm zone.

A word of warning, make sure your family is into the same mindset as you about this, or you may end up

like me, the only one who can collect the mail, since the rest dont dare !

HAhahahhahahah. I know how you feel.

I also think the Fibaro contact sensors can use an external magnet sensor. This way you could locate you Fibaro sensor on the outside of the box and use a typical magnet contact sensor on the inside. May help to increase range.

Or if you have power nearby, use a fibaro binary sensor and a standard magnetic door sensor.

That is hard core mail sensing :-)

My experience with magnetic senors and other sensors like Fibaro Universal Sensor is that it takes 2-3 seconds for the controller to react when switch opens or closes. If there is just a one second close/open cycle, the chance is that the controller will not correctly report this cycle or even start trigger a rule/scene...

So what should I choose for the solution to make it work? The magnetic contacts are too slow.

I think the contact sensors should work, they still send a message as soon as contact is lost. Even is contact is re-established within 1 second. I tried this with 4in1 sensors and enocean and works fine.

Other option would be to use a 4in1 sensor in the mailbox. Then trigger the event on either contact sensor, light level(should be dark in mailbox) or motion. Or a rule that triggers on any and all of these events.

Link to a contact scanning?? Brand?

Zipato 4in1. Guess for example this one https://www.zipato.com/product/multisensor-quad-2
