Setting dimmer intensity when a light is turned on

Need Answer

Is there a way to set the dimmer intensity based on time of day when I turn on a light?

For example, when I turn on the bathroom light at 6am I would like it set at 30%, but when I turn it on at 18:00, I would like it set at 100%. I can't seem to find a way to create a rule that will set the intensity.

Yes and no.

The problem is that you can not store/send the intensity in the switch/module. It always remembers the last intensity or goes to 100%.

But you could make a rule to turn it down/up again. But this would cause a delay/flikkering.

You could also make a rule that turns on the light with the wanted intensity and then turns it off again. So at 18.00 you turn it on at 30% and turn it off. Then when you switch on the light it goes to 30%.

Ok. Thanks. It seems like a lack of basic functionality or perhaps a limitation of the Z-Wave technology? I sell and install HAI systems and am currently testing the Zipato to see if I want to offer that to my clients. So far, it's not looking good. Although it's a lower cost solution, there seems to be some basic functionality that's missing. Add that to a lack of manufacturer support and it doesn't seem like something I want to put in my product line.

I'll keep testing and see what happens.

I have a bunch of stuff to test that I haven't installed yet (garage door opener, multi sensors, wired security module, door sensors, motion sensors, outlets, smart switches, etc.) so I hope my experience gets better.

Either that or I lose out a bunch of money in an expensive test.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed because I really want it to work.

Hey,

you can store the intensity in a variable. When you next time start the device you can use this variable. I do this with a Fibaro RGBW device. I have several rules which dim up or down. To avoid flikkering, I first read the intensity fo the device into a variable. Then change the variable and use the changed variable as new setpoint for the device. So all rules use the same "level". Works fine for me.

Can you post an example of how you create such a rule?

WIth Fibaro dimmer you have 2 inputs: S1 and S2.

S1 control standard dimmer functionality and works exactly how describedd by HeroS. S2 has only scene activation functionality anche can trigger rules without directly controlling the dimmer.

To achieve what you want you have to connect your switch to S2 (I hope you have monostables switch) and then create a rule to manage click.

This solution has two main drawbacks:

  • 1st - to trigger inclusion mode you need to triple click S1 button, so in case of problems you will have to disassemble something
  • 2nd - if zipabox has some problem your light will not work (this will not happen with button connected to S1)

Another simple option would be to create a rule that when the switch is turn off it first sets its value to 30% then turns off. This way it will always come on at a lower level then dim up to the required level at night. Also good for the bulbs.
