Virtual Device that can handle string

Hello,

I'd like to create a virtual device that can handle string (non numeric data) but was not able to find one.

More precisely, I try to convert the wind direction of an oregon wind sensor that gives degrees to strings (like N, NO, O, SO...) using a virtual device and a rule.

Any advice ?
