What do you think of implementing drivers for devices?

Under Consideration

With the analogy of a computer which is an agglomeration of heterogeneous pieces from different manufacturers, what do you think of creating drivers for each type of device?

The idea comes from the fact that we notice sometimes some changes in the behavior but without knowing why. My idea is to implement a driver system for each kind of device with a versioning system. When a newer version is issued, a notification will help the user to understand what has been corrected and why. I think that it will help a lot. The zipabox will remain the "motherboard" but all the other pieces will be more "independent" from the system itself. It will help also to discover if a change of a specific device had some other side-effects with the possibility to go back in time by using a previous version of its driver.

What the zipato team thinks about that? A good idea? Or too complicate or too risky for future maintenance?

I am interested to get your feedback.

In a wonderful world, these drivers will have an open API so that anyone can implement new devices in Zipabox. Zipato can support official drivers but also give access to unofficial list for the most adventurous.
