Martin,

Most motion sensors are infrared which are not generally affected by lightning. The problem I see for outdoor motion sensing is first, finding a motion sensor with a good IP rating (waterproof, dustproof) and then how to avoid masses of air triggering the sensor.

The only motion sensor I have found that is somewhat an outdoor sensor is the Aeon Labs Multisensor Gen 5 (IP42) however it is not waterproof. Also adjusting it is tricky and not completely reliable, false alarms are triggered when air blows strongly.

...and it sucks too much batteries if it is cold....

I have been using a Vision ZP3102 in my shed for well over a year now without changing batteries. It is seldom triggered in winter, though, because I dont visit the shed much during the cold months. It has endured minus 16 deg C and is working fine.

If I could shield it from rain I would not hesitate to use it outside.

Yesterday I thought that it triggered falsely for the first time, but when I inspected it, there were clear indication of mice activity (droppings) on the shelf where it sits.

you could use any outdoor ip rated motion detector on the market that you like or is highly recommended, just add a fibaro universal binary sensor to it.

Adrian, could you please point us to a tutorial on how to achieve that IP +Fibaro sensor device?

Many thanks
