Can the background colour of the Zipatile be changed?

I am considering buying a white Zipatile but would like a black background, is this possible?

It actually has a black background. You can change the background in Android settings like with any phone.

Yes, but only for advertising. I had bought it because I wanted a white background. Had I known, I would have preferred the black one. 😒

That's bad advertising then. Some people might actually want the white screen.

Fortunately I want the black screen.

Actually the screen you are seeing is the old UI with inverted colors (maybe one more option with it, pure bg or high contrast text, not sure).

You can invert them in Accessibility settings, although I don't recommend you do that, really stresses the eyes a lot.
