Can zipabox control Somfy Zwave - Electric Roller Blinds or Curtains

Need Answer

Anybody has any experience with the Somfy Zwave controller on the zipabox? Thinking of buying one but keen to get thoughts before I invest in that.

I'm also considering roller blinds, but not sure if that will work as well.

I'd especially like to know if the Z-Wave Digital Motor Interface (ZDMI) works (or will work at some point) with the Zipabox. It looks like it allows you to use digital, 2-way IO motors rather than one-way RTS motors.

I'm considering putting in a couple of new awnings, and so this would be important information to have.

I know it works with RTS motors if you have the 433 Mhz, see below link, I would asume it works for Zwave. You can probably ask though zipato support.

Oh I know the RTS motors work, I have 2 blinds and 2 awnings with those. I avoided the IO motors because they only seemed to be compatible with the Somfy Tahoma home automation system. But this suggests that IO motors might work with the Zipabox. If so, they're much better because they're 2-way.

I guess with the information you already have you could open a ticket at zipato support and ask them. Would be nice to have position feedback of the motors.

Done!

Please let me know what they say, I will automate my blinds in a near future and would be nice to have these motors working with zipato. Thanks.

They say that the "Somfy Z-Wave to Digital Motor Interface" is not yet tested with the Zipabox. However, it is certified.

An additional complication here: it turns out there are 3 types of Somfy motors, not 2:

- RTS (unidirectional - the Zipabox can't know where the blinds are)

- IO (bidirectional) - I think it only works with Somfy's TaHoma controller

- ILT (bidirectional?) - can be interfaced by Z-Wave using the aforementioned (expensive!) interface

The safe option is RTS. ILT would be nice, but if we can't guarantee it will work with the Zipabox it's a lot of extra money to spend. You need of those gadgets for each blind or awning!

Actually the ILT interface works with 2 distinct motor types: Sonesse 50 ILT and Sonesse 30 RS-485

Complicating things further, I can't find the interface for sale in Europe, only in the US (where the Z-Wave frequency is different).

I'm trying to see if there is availability of the interface and motors in Mexico, I have a friend that works in Somfy. I think bidirectional is the way to go (expensive though).

What is your experience with unidirectional control on Zipabox? Do you have variables to know in which state the blinds are? Virtual Sensors?

It's really not a huge problem provided that you get in the habit of either controlling the blinds from the Zipabox, or adjusting the Zipabox blind positions when you've used the remote. Mostly, the blinds operate automatically according to Zipabox rules. Mostly, if you are only fully closing or fully opening, even if the Zipabox gets out of synch it's not a big problem. For example, if the blinds are open and the Zipabox tries to open them, no problem. For partial opening, it's trickier. To do that I first ensure in the rule that the Zipabox and the blinds are fully synched by fully opening and then fully closing the blinds. Then I set the position I want. I posted about it a while ago.

Thanks for sharing. Have you used Qubino Flush shutter by any chance?

No, I've never heard of it!

Partly unrelated, but I made a similar solution as described here with a Somfy RTS remote:

Controlling with Zipabox 433Mhz module was so unreliable. This one works perfectly.

YMPPA,

That is an awesome project, shame that zipato does not allow users to write plugins... I'm thinking some sort of interface can be designed with the new arduino wifi using http commands. It would be awesome to include feedback from the motor for position. I have never used arduinos, in my time the most popular where PICS and AVR's, but this looks good too. Thanks for sharing.

Another cool product that comes with optional zwave, specially useful if you dont want to change your blinds and/or also have manual control in case there is a power failure.
