Getting the power module close to the mains power inlet for the house

Need Answer

Hi,

With much experimentation, I have now got the ideal location in the house for most of my sensors to register and work correctly.

However, I had intended to have my zipabox close to my electrical mains input so that I could monitor all the incoming mains (I have three UK consumer units inbound, one for house, one for garage and one for upstairs shower).

Problem now is that I have no way to connect the sensor from the power module to the mains incoming. What can be done? My questions:

a) Is it possible to extend the power sensor leads to say 12m by cutting them and then connecting an extension piece on them or would this attenuate the induced signal so much that I will not get accurate readings?

b) Do I have to purchase another Zipabox and then cluster the zipaboxes together (i.e. get a new garage zipabox near the incoming mains to act as a "remote" sensor

Thanks in advance

/Marcus

I don't think this is a problem. Use a twisted pair cable.

a) It is not recommended to extend the power sensor leads by cutting them and connecting an extension piece to them. This could potentially attenuate the induced signal and result in inaccurate readings. Instead, it is advisable to use an extension cable that is specifically designed for power sensors and has minimal signal loss.

b) You do not necessarily have to purchase another Zipabox. Instead, you could consider using a powerline communication adapter or a wireless sensor to transmit the data from the power sensor to the Zipabox. This way, you can avoid the need to run a physical cable between the power sensor and the Zipabox. Alternatively, if you require a high degree of accuracy in your readings, you could consider installing a dedicated power meter near the incoming mains and using its output to connect to your Zipabox.

It is crucial to ensure that the power module is placed away from areas with high moisture levels, such as bathrooms or kitchens, and protected from extreme temperatures or physical damage. It is also essential to follow any local building codes and regulations when installing electrical components. DGme Paystub

a) It is not recommended to cut and extend power sensor leads as it can attenuate the induced signal and affect the accuracy of the readings. Additionally, it can also pose a safety risk if not done correctly. Instead, you can use a powerline communication device to transmit the data from the power sensor to the Zipabox. This will allow you to place the Zipabox in a convenient location while still being able to monitor the incoming mains.

b) Clustering Zipaboxes can be a viable solution, but it can also increase complexity and cost. It is worth considering alternative solutions first, such as using powerline communication devices, before resorting to purchasing additional Zipaboxes. My Health Online Sutter

To ensure a power module's safe and reliable operation, it is important to take certain precautions during installation. First and foremost, it should be located in an area with low moisture levels and protected from extreme temperatures and physical damage. This means avoiding placement in areas like bathrooms or kitchens, which are prone to high humidity levels, and taking measures to shield it from accidental impact or exposure to harsh weather conditions.

Additionally, it is important to follow any local building codes and regulations when installing electrical components. This may include requirements for grounding or insulation and guidelines for proper wiring and placement of electrical outlets. By adhering to these guidelines, you can help ensure the safety and reliability of your power module, as well as comply with local regulations and standards. DGme Paystub

A power inlet box is like an electrical outlet in your house. When you connect a manual transfer switch to a portable generator, www.planstlevents.com the power inlet box becomes the link between the generator and your essential circuits. When you're not using the generator, you can close the power inlet box to protect your home's electrical system.

a) Extending the power sensor leads to 12m by cutting them and adding an extension piece can cause signal loss and affect the accuracy of the readings. It's not recommended to modify the sensor in this way.

b) A better solution would be to purchase another Zipabox and use it as a remote sensor for monitoring the incoming mains. This would allow you to keep the original Zipabox in its ideal location and still monitor all the incoming mains. You can then cluster the Zipaboxes together to get a comprehensive view of your energy usage.
