The Zipato/Hauppage connection and its implications

Need Answer

I appreciate your work, but now I am feeling pretty stupid:

  • I am a beta tester of your iOS app. There is a lot of work left before it can leave beta state.
  • There is an Hauppage iOS app available. which accepts Zipato logins and which does not show any of the bugs of the Zipato next generation app. It looks identical to the Zipato app.

Which means for me, that Zipato developed the app for Hauppage and forgot to filter the logins. This is also the reason for the non working translations in the old app: The new system had to be in place before publishing the Hauppage app.

Now my questions are:

  1. Why did you tell us weeks ago, that the new app will be available in a week when so much work is still left?
  2. Why is your own app not finished but the identical Hauppage app is?
  3. Will you block access to the Hauppage app or will you encourage the Zipabox customers to use it as long as the old Zipato app is not working and the new Zipato app is not working?

Please don't block the hauppage app because it's working for me at the moment in stead of the old App.

I sure hope we don't end up with the way the Hauppage app works. I tried convincing the rest of the family, but nobody seems to like it. And it's pretty buggy too.

Most of us feel that the old app had a much better user experience. But that one is now broken too. So we are left for weeks and weeks with two faulty apps.

Beta IOS app expires in 13 days. We have to wait

In the situation as it is now - beta, I do not like it.

I like it. Sure, it need improvement, but it has potential.

@R2D2: I don't know about you, but "potential" is not what I paid for. Currently, the old app is the only official one. The fact a new app is on the way is no excuse to not repair the title-key bug. Zipato is not an open source community, but a commercial company. We paid for their hardware and software. The app is broken so they should fix it. Other companies push new updates to the app stores every two weeks, without problems. At this moment in time, I'd be happy to switch to a better z-wave controller, with better software once it becomes available.

@roel00: I know what you mean and usually I would see it the same way. Unfortunately I came to the conclusion that the whole Z-Wave thing is not yet matured enough for mass market. E.g. it would be nice to get VDE certified switches and dimmers. But there are non available. What I want to say is: This whole Z-Wave thing is not yet ready for "normal" people, problems are to be expected. To change things big players have to enter the market. But they will not enter as long as small companies have not burned themselves by establishing a small market.

@R2D2: I do agree that most Z-Wave devices are not ready yet for mass market. I haven't seen any well designed and engineered dimmers, switches, doorlocks or sensors. It's all cheap plastic and cheap electronics. I personally don't really care about VDE certification, but I get where you want to go: the products are just not good enough.

And how about Smart Things? They are recently acquired by Samsung. That's a pretty big player. Their app seems to have the Wife Acceptance Factor. Smart Things also has an open API en actively fosters a platform for developers joining in with their product. It's a networking business model, which has the potential to lead to hypergrowth if backed by a strong community. I t don't know how to compare Smart Things to Zipato, but I think Zipato really needs to keep a sharp eye on their strategy. After all, replacing the Zipabox with another controller is not a big issue for most users.

It appears that Zipato is becoming an OEM for better known companies. I wish them luck and success. Because this way we can use our mighty but complex Zipabox while funding is assured.

Regarding VDE certification: Without it, many people - myself including - will not integrate dimmers into their walls. It's just too risky for me.

Useful to know about the Hauppage app. I just downloaded it and it works, which is a major bonus as the Zipato one is so broken right now!
