ZigBee Light Link (ZLL) support or ZigBee 3.0

Ruud Boon shared this idea 6 years ago
Under Consideration

ZLL is a ZigBee standard designed specifically for residential lighting. Big company's like Ikea and Philips Hue are using this protocol for controlling lights.

ZigBee wise Zipatile/Zipabox is supporting the protocol ZigBee Home Automation only so direct communication with the light bulbs and switches using Light Link isn't possible.

ZigBee 3.0 is the next generation of ZigBee alliance to unify the different Zigbee profiles under a single umbrella to allow even more kinds of devices to interoperate.

Looking at the required hardware I think Zipatile/Zipabox could support both protocols (correct me if I'm wrong) that's why I'm wondering if there are any plans to integrate ZLL or ZigBee 3.0 in the near feature in the current products or new products?

The missing support is currently holding me back from buying the Zipatile or Zipabox.

Update: It didn't hold me back from buying it, it's on his way now. Hoping that support will be added!

I think a different chipset will be needed for 3.0, still would be nice ZLL would be also compatible.

Does anybody know what kind of chipset is currently present?

Different protocol. Chipsets can be the same but the issue with ZLL is that it can still be different from one manufacturer to another, there is no definite standard. Zigbee HA1.2 is better and Zigbee 3.0 will be best and fully compliant across all Zigbee protocols. I think you will just need to wait until Zigbee 3.0 is more complete and chipsets and protocols are more abundant, then you will see the integration into Zipato. You may need to purchase another Zigbee expansion module for the Zipabox or additional Zipatile though.

I ordered the Zigate for my new build home automation system :-)

@Adrian, ZZL is a standard, but some manufacturers didn't fully implemented the standard (http://www.zigbee.org/zigbee-for-developers/applicationstandards/zigbee-light-link/)

I do agree that ZIgBee 3.0 could be the solution since it includes almost all previous standards. Hoping that Zipato could give some insight in the chipset they are using to check it can handle Zigbee pro 2015 (R21) specification.

@darkwing Thnx will check out Zigate, maybe it could be a nice extension having that running on a Raspberry Pi
