Ping device

Under Consideration

I would like to have some kind of "polling/ping device".

It pings an IP every 10s or something like that. If the ping is answered the device is on, if not it's off.

I see alot of use for this this. the most obvius is to trigger alarm if a machine gose down but you could use it to turn off the light if you shut down a computer.

I would use it to see if anybody is home.

When I arrive home my phone automaticly connects to my wifi (and will start answer to ping) and when I leave home the ping won't be answered anymore.

If I hade one "ping device" for my phone and one for my wife's phone I can trigger rules based on arriving and leaving home.

This would be a nice feature, triggering scenes/devices when connecting to my wireless LAN...

Hi Rein,

That would be nice. I have a workaround that i'm currently trying.

On my phone i'm use the automateitapp to check if i'm connect to my wifi >> if connect i send a http request (very 15 min) with valua = 1 to zipato.

On the zipato i reset the valua to 0 ever 14 min. If the valua stays at 0 then i'm away.

My wifi doens't have a data connection when she is not home. I do have one so i'm using Google latitude script.

On my comp. i'm also using a http request (with virutal sensor). When i turn on the comp i have a vbs scipt that runs and sends a 1 and when log off i send 0 to zipato.

Device polling is very important. There is plenty of devices on the market which needs to be polled in order to retrieve their status. For instance, you can have a switch which does not report it's status if toggled manually and the only way to keep Zipabox and the switch in sync is device polling.

Proposal: with Zipato smartphone application, when the application no longer detects Wi-Fi connection (one or more smartphone) after x minutes (configurable):

1) delay xx minutes (configurable), to make sure that the Wi-Fi is no longer available

2) If true, when a 3G connection is available. Sending of data to initiate, via a rule, or a scenario action.

Sorry for my english

Any news about the "Ping Device" feature ?

The workarounds using virtual device have a major flow : no internet => no detection...

Sounds like a nice feature, is it implemented?

(Warning : Apple device automatically disconnect from WIFI when screen is off, this may not always be a reliable way to check presence)

I really want this function, but solved it with another solution.... Now I get problems with my Androids using the doze-function :(

Damn.... I thought I ruled the world ;)

Hey, it is not a big problem...

Zipabox is still in beta (v0.9), they'll do it for v1.0 (if it comes out one day)

HAHaha...
